Photographer Imre Benkő passed away

On 15 October Kossuth as well as Béla Balázs Award winning photographer and regular member of HAA, Imre Benkő passed away at the age of 83. He was an indispensable and unmistakable figure in documentary photography, working for more than sixty years in Hungary and in many parts of the world. HAA regards his passing as losing one of its own.
In our last interview with him he highlighted: „I have color photographs, quite a few, but what I really felt was my own was the world of black and white images. It's an abstraction: the harmony of dark and light shades creates the image. At first, we worked with harsh tones, almost graphic effects. On my long trips I always had two cameras with me, one with color film. In those cases, you have to make a decision - what was a really important subject was always shot on black and white film."
