Jesuit Set Designs in Rome at the exhibition of HAA

The exhibition is presenting the world of Baroque Jesuit theatre, the special encounter of faith, art and theatrical illusion through 17th-18th century engravings from the Jesuit set design book of Sopron. The exhibition, which can be viewed in the courtyard of the Falconieri Palace of the Hungarian Academy in Rome until 31 December, was organized by HAA. On 18 September at the opening of the exhibition actor Zoltán Rátóti, Vice-President of HAA gave a welcoming speech.
In his welcoming speech the Vice-President highlighted: The speciality of the exhibition presented by the Hungarian Academy of Arts lies in the fact that it reveals a less frequently researched, yet extremely rich layer of the Jesuit educational method: stage set designs. These works were not only made with aesthetic sensitivity, but also have deep symbolism. Sky and earth, heaven and hell, sin and grace...architecture, which wants to connect the sky with the earth, is embodied in a similar way in the works of Imre Makovecz. As Makovecz put it: "Architecture's only, true and proper adventure has always been how it can connect the sky and the earth. When it builds a church, it wants to provide space and scenery for the drama of the liturgy." Summarizing the exhibition of HAA the Vice-President also said: It aims to shed new light on the union of Jesuit art and pedagogy, where sacred content is embodied in theatrical forms.
HAA plays a prominent cultural diplomatic role in Rome in 2025 on the occasion of the Jubilee Year of the Holy Spirit, within the framework of which it organized a series of programs for visitors to the Hungarian Academy in Rome.
As part of the event series three of the nine Sections of HAA present themselves in the Eternal City. In May 2025 an exhibition of sacred-themed works by 12 HAA artists opened at the Hungarian Academy in Rome, entitled Dum spiro spero…/ As long as I live, I hope….
The third event is to take place on 19 December 2025, when academicians of the Section of Music and the multiple international competition winner Cantemus Kórus Pro Musica Girls' Choir is to give a festive concert. The performance aims to evoke the true spirit of the Advent period of waiting – the spiritual immersion that prepares us for the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ.
