Sculptor György Bartusz passed away
On 25 September 2025 in Košice at the age of 92 György Bartusz, a sculptor, painter, graphic artist and action artist who won the Mihály Munkácsy Award, an outstanding artist of modern figurative and memorial sculpture, a defining figure of Central European avant-garde art, and a regular member of HAA passed away. HAA regards his passing as losing one of its own.
György Bartusz's life and art were defined by his deep knowledge of Hungarian, Slovak and Czech culture. His works reflect a simple creative process, react to the surrounding world, and deal with its reality. They are dynamic and archaic at the same time, timelessness and immobility also appear in them. He worked in several styles. Outstanding works were created under his hands in the fields of concretism, radical eclecticism, new sensibility, gesture painting, and action art represented by Czech and Slovak artists. In the 80s his works were characterized by expressivity and deep emotional saturation, both in sculpture and in his actions and concepts. His gesture painting went beyond traditional tools and genre practice. The actions and performances he performed represented a new, specific form of expression of gesture art. With his individual art theory and philosophy of art he created an independent style in the early 80s. In his artistic career extending to recent years he created time-limited art series demonstrating the momentum of art itself.
